What is Reasoning?: Presentation
July 3, 2006
by Erik Moore
On June 24th Erik Moore presented
a talk to the group Evolution
Revolution about Reasoning, how we
define it, and how assumptions in our
definitions change our expectations.
Included in the talk were examples
like the TV show CrossFire, high
school debates, and other types of
public discourse commonly thought
of as reasoning.  Then he discussed
the internal personal dialog with the
group and ways that we can all
enhance our reasoning. For more
information on this presentation and
topic, join MOR and engage in
discussion in our
forum.

MOR Funds Helps UN out in the
Horn of Africa and Darfur
July 3, 2006
by Erik Moore
Again, Mission of Reason is
donating a significant portion of our
yearly intake to communities in
crisis.  Again, we're helping
UNICEF,
this time in Darfur where UNICEF is
one of the few organizations that is
able to sustain a presence in Darfur,
and has an established presence in
the horn of Africa helping out with
the drought there.  For more
information on these donations,
please join and check out the info in
our
forum.

MOR Funds relief efforts for
South Asian Earthquake
October 17, 2005
by Erik Moore
With the news of the earthquake in
Pakistan and the need for
immediate help, Mission of Reason
has donated funds to support this
vial international rescue effort in one
of the harshest regions of the world.
MOR has again chosen
UNICEF as
the  relief organization through
which to support this effort.  As
members have suggestions for what
else we could do, please enter
those into the forum for
consideration.
Denver Rejects Light of Reason
October 18, 2005
by Erik Moore
The Downtown Denver Partnership
(in an unclear relationship with
Denver Civic Ventures) recently
rejected "The Light of Reason," the
MOR float proposal to Denver's
Parade of Lights.  The DDP was
unwilling to release the selection
method, and shunned MOR
requests to participate in meetings
that Christian religious groups were
invited to.  Even though DDP
initially said that up to 3 floats would
be added, the only accepted float
was led by the Christian minister
who complained loudly that what he
considered religious meaning
inherent in the season was not
being expressed in this civic event.
MOR will continue to look for
positive forums and events in
Denver and elsewhere to further
the popularity of rational thinking.

Donation to Help U.S. Gulf
Hurricane Victims
Sept 25, 2005
by Erik Moore
Again as disaster strikes Mission of
Reason has donated funds to the
relief efforts.  This time we are
assisting hurricane victims in the
Gulf Coast of the United States.
Again Mission of Reason selected
UNICEF as the relief organization
through which we act.  While we are
a small organization, and members
often contribute to humanitarian
efforts independently, MOR
members felt it was important for the
organization itself to make a direct
contribution.

MOR endorses Lobbying Effort
Sept 25, 2005
by Erik Moore
Mission of Reason has just issued
an endorsement to the Secular
Coalition for America.  They are the
first organization we endorse, as
they provide a political voice for
rational resolution of problems.  We
will look for other organizations to
add to our list of endorsed
organizations, but for now congrats
to the Secular Coalition for America.
You can see their site at
secular.org.
MOR Donates to Tsunami Fund
Jan 18, 2005
by Erik Moore
MOR recently donated over 20% of
our liquid assets to the
UNICEF
tsunami relief fund.  This was
something the board of directors felt
a humanitarian obligation to do in
order to make one of the biggest
impacts we could with our limited
funds to improve the tragic situation
in south Asia.  We chose UNICEF
because it is a non-national,
non-sectarian, non-partisan
organization that has a long-term
commitment to helping people
across the globe. UNICEF was also
selected because it is a small part of
the
United Nations, an organization,
and indeed a
whole family of
organizations that has provided a
forum where the people of the world
can come and work towards both
resolving their differences rationally
and facing the challenges of
humanity intelligently.

One of the newest section of the
Mission of Reason website is the

include reviews of classical films,
books, etc. that are significant in
presenting a rational view, as well as
contemporary films that affect how
people think about reasoning today.

MOR goes 501(c)3
Nov 18th 2004
by Erik Moore
MOR has received notification from
the U.S. Internal Revenue Service
that it has been designated a
501(c)3 non-profit corporation.
This means people will be able to
make tax deductible contributions
that are monetary or gifts.  We will
be putting up the mechanism to do
that on this site shortly.  Achieving
this status is also allows us to seek
a variety of grant funding for special
projects and operations as the
needs arise.  If you'd like to help out
with some of these projects, let us
know.

Local Chapters Guidelines
Available!
August 27, 2007
by Erik Moore
At the last MOR board meeting,
guidelines and bylaws for local
chapters were approved, so now local
groups can get together and work
under the Mission of Reason
umbrella.  Local chapters will be able
to operate throughout the country,
but as with any 501c3 charity, they
will need to be accountable to both
the MOR organization and to local
code, including charitable
organization registration, etc.  This is
a great opportunity for many who
have been looking to hold local
meetings.
